The project

The union court redevelopment included the redevelopment of Union Court and University Avenue at the Australian National University in Acton, ACT. It involved the demolition, adaption and construction of five buildings above a common basement level containing carparking and retail areas. The five new buildings included student accommodation, culture and events, a student hub, collaborative learning and a gym – as well as a pool and health and wellbeing centre. The existing site had challenges relating to fire brigade intervention and construction using fire protected cross laminated timber (CLT).

Our solution

We worked with the stakeholders to assess the unique fire hazards and develop performance solutions for the exposed CLT, fire resistance, increased travel distances, firefighting equipment, smoke hazard management and evacuation. We assessed key fire compartmentation issues relating to the use of CLT slabs and separation between adjacent accommodation and culture and events buildings. We also consulted with ACT Fire and Rescue to develop pragmatic solutions for brigade access to the building and the firefighting equipment.
