Radiant heat transfer modelling is a key tool that the fire safety engineers at Warringtonfire use when trying to predict the expected radiant heat transfer from fires to the surroundings and between buildings.

Radiation is one of the mechanisms of fire spread and occurs when the intensity of a fire is sufficient to radiate heat onto nearby objects and cause ignition. This can occur by either piloted or non-piloted ignition. Radiation is usually the dominant mode of heat transfer when the object is remote from the fire, particularly where fire spread occurs between a building and an allotment boundary.

Why Warringtonfire for radiant heat transfer modelling?

Our fire safety engineers have extensive experience in using tools such as Firewind and Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) to evaluate the expected radiant heat transfer and develop performance based solutions to assist our clients to meet their design intent while ensuring safe building designs.

Some examples of how we can use radiant heat modelling to assist you with your project include:

  • Rationalising requirements for protection of openings exposed to the allotment boundary or to another building, such as the use of stainless steel screening over windows or other performance based methods of protection.
  • Determining suitable protection provided to fire hydrant boosters in conjunction with the local fire brigade.
  • Reviewing occupant tenability criteria for evacuation based on exposure to radiant heat from a fire.
  • Verifying the likelihood of fire spread by ignition of surrounding materials.

Fire Brigade Intervention Modelling

We can quantify firefighting activities in our fire engineering assessments by using the fire brigade intervention model (FBIM). The FBIM predicts the time taken by a fire brigade to undertake its activities at the fire scene from time of notification through to control and extinguishment.
