Meet John Jones Lead Technical Officer at Warringtonfire

John Jones is a lead technical officer at Warringtonfire, based in High Wycombe, UK. He joined in October 2017 after completing a degree in Forensic Science at the University of Wolverhampton.

John has long been interested in applied science, enjoying the hands-on approach to applying knowledge and theories, and this is one of the reasons he was first drawn to Warringtonfire. He was looking for an analytical role where he could also take part in performing the foundations of science that he learned in his degree - and that’s what a position as a graduate technical officer could offer.

Speaking about how he came to his job at Warringtonfire, John said: “Forensic science may not be an obvious starting point for a career in fire testing, but it’s actually quite a broad field and we employ people from many backgrounds. An understanding of science is certainly helpful, but there is no specific degree that we look for.

“Before joining the company, I didn’t know much about the field, but I knew that it was unique and that I would eventually be responsible for conducting tests myself, which I found exciting. I also knew there would be an element of interrogating test results and providing detailed outcome reports, and my background in forensics lends itself well to that.”

After three years progressing through the technical officer role structure, John was recently promoted to lead technical officer and will act as a team leader. His new position will involve continuing to manage fire projects, but he will now also manage the team and their project schedules directly, as well as offering guidance on the industry, British and European standards, and problem solving more generally.

John said: “Thanks to a recent restructure, we have even more scope within the department to grow and more job roles. It also allows for more inter-department connection and collaboration - and therefore the ability to develop technical skills and knowledge further.

“This is such a unique and interesting job and it’s easy to develop a real passion for it. And that’s what makes it enjoyable to come to work each day.”
