The project

International House and Daramu House form part of the Barangaroo South precinct. They have street level retail with six commercial office levels above. A unique feature of the buildings is the construction of the office levels with exposed timber elements – including cross laminated timber (CLT), glue laminated timber (glulam) and laminated veneer lumber (LVL). When it was completed, International House was the first commercial engineered timber building in Australia.

Our solution

Warringtonfire Australia provided fire safety engineering services and developed solutions for both buildings. The use of engineered timber posed particular challenges, including reduced fire ratings and the construction of the fire stairs, lift shafts and service shafts. Our performance solutions involved rigorous calculations and working with specialist testing authorities to determine adequate levels of fire and life safety. The buildings also needed more traditional assessments for occupant evacuation, fire brigade intervention and the rationalisation of fire safety systems.

Our team of fire safety engineers worked closely with Lendlease to develop these fire safety engineering solutions and to have them reviewed and approved by the relevant authorities.
