The project

Surgical, Treatment and Rehabilitation Service (STARS) includes a new eight storey healthcare building located in Herston Health Precinct, Brisbane.

The challenge

Warringtonfire Australia were engaged by Watpac and the MNHHS as the fire safety engineers for the Surgical, Treatment and Rehabilitation Service (STARS). The new hospital includes a new eight storey healthcare building with a single basement level. The building consists of 100 rehabilitation beds, special purpose rehabilitation support areas and a surgical and endoscopic centre – with a 32 bed surgical inpatient room, seven operating theatres, three endoscopy rooms and recovery spaces.

Our solution

The prescriptive fire safety requirements of the National Construction Code (NCC) often result in impractical design solutions that impede the day-today functionality of rehabilitation and ambulatory care health buildings. Our team of fire safety engineers developed a wide range of performance based solutions to meet the unique clinical, security and fire safety needs of this facility. This required extensive consultation with stakeholders – including the builder, the fire brigade and the local health authority.
