The project
Acciona Samsung Bouygues JV, through Jacobs & Aurecon JV, engaged the Warringtonfire Sydney fire safety consultancy office to provide the fire safety engineering services for the WestConnex Stage 3a, Sydney project.
The challenge
WestConnex is part of an integrated transport plan to keep Sydney moving. The project involved the design and construction of twin 7.5 km tunnels linking the M4 East at Haberfield with the new M8 at St Peters and accommodates up to four lanes of traffic in each direction. The tunnels provide connection provisions to the future Rozelle Interchange and required careful consideration of integrated incident response and how to facilitate safe occupant evacuation and fire brigade intervention.
Our solution
As the Qualified Fire Engineer (QFE) for the project, Warringtonfire undertook stakeholder consultation regarding fire and life safety with the asset owner, operator and FRNSW. Warringtonfire prepared a fire engineering report for the tunnel – including the fire resistance and fire rating assessment report, egress design report and emergency services access report. We were also involved in the commissioning phase of the project. Warringtonfire undertook site inspections, witnessed testing of the key fire safety systems, and certified compliance with the fire safety engineering documentation we prepared as the QFE for the project.
We were also responsible for reviewing the level of compliance of the main carriageways, underground facilities and above ground facilities with the National Construction Code (NCC) and preparing performance solutions for these buildings. Fire safety engineering assessments were prepared for the main carriageway tunnels and ramps, underground facilities such as plant areas, access and egress passageways, and above ground facilities such as ventilation buildings and associated shafts, adits and tunnels, and other plant areas.
