The project
Inner Sydney High School for Hansen Yuncken and Schools Infrastructure NSW. Date of completion 2021.
The challenge
A new comprehensive high school for 1200 students occupying a site in Surry Hills, an inner-city suburb of Sydney. The future focused school comprises a campus approach consisting of a new high-rise tower and three refurbished heritage buildings.
The new building includes a large gymnasium and movement studio, a roof top outdoor games court and a central resource library with ‘mini-libraries’ located throughout the school. The design brief was intended to foster strong connection to the community through shared use of selected campus facilities including the basement gymnasium space as a public entertainment venue.
The development was staged with the refurbished heritage buildings being occupied initially by the school whilst the construction of the high-rise tower was completed. This presented unique fire safety hazards and challenges throughout the construction process.
Our solution
Warringtonfire Australia developed a comprehensive fire safety strategy for the school which included a major fire safety upgrade of the existing heritage buildings and integration with the new tower. Our team of fire safety engineers undertook advanced evacuation modelling to evaluate and inform the holistic evacuation strategy for the school. Smoke modelling was used to assist in the design of the mechanical and natural smoke hazard management provisions for the basement gymnasium and assembly spaces.
Our team of fire safety engineers also developed an interim fire safety strategy for the school to manage fire safety risks during construction. This included extensive stakeholder consultation, fire risk assessment, and development of mitigation measures which were progressively reviewed and updated throughout the construction process.
